Biology in Focus 2nd Edition Reading Guides and Videos

Next year, we are switching from Campbell's Biology 8th Edition to Biology in Focus 2nd Edition (BIF). The guided reading questions that I've been using (and blogged about here) were an edited version of the Holtzclaws' reading guides for Campbell's 8th edition. I used the Holtzclaws' AP Biology Review book to help me to know what questions to eliminate to shorten the reading guides so that they were only asking questions that were key to helping students understand content important for the AP Biology curriculum.

For many of the chapters, I just needed to change chapter and section numbers to adjust the guide for BIF. Other chapters combined the content of 2 Campbell chapters, so that took a little more work. Occasionally one section was moved from one chapter to another. I've been feverishly working on updating these for the entire book since I wanted to print hard copies for each chapter before I checked out of my classroom for the summer, so I can work on making keys for each of them while I'm home on summer "break." I'll include links to each of them here. I do imagine that I'll need to do some revision as I go through each of the guides this summer and fortunately they will show up automatically in the links.

Guided Reading Questions and Videos for AP Biology

I've been meaning to put this together all year, but life has just been too busy to get it all together. Even though it's my third year teaching the new AP Biology curriculum, I've come to realize that I will never finish tweaking this course, and so will never just breeze through a year of teaching it. On the bright side, I do feel like each year I teach it a little better! Here are my links to guided reading questions and corresponding videos to supplement the reading in AP Biology. All of these links are in old blog posts, but I thought I might be easier to have all of the links in one post. Here is a link to a document that has all of these units in table form, which I like better. It just doesn't copy and paste well into blogger.  Right now the chapter numbers correspond to the Campbell Biology 8th Ed., but next year we are switching to the 2nd Edition of Biology in Focus, so next year, I'll be changing the chapter numbers. I may change the questions some, but they should already match fairly well with Biology in Focus since I had chosen them based on what I saw in the Holtzclaw Test Prep review book for Campbell Biology and Biology in Focus. I love that Test Prep review book by the way!

Unit 10 Reading Guides-Human Form and Function

The last set of guided reading questions has been updated and is ready to go. The end of the year is in sight. I'm excited, since this year we'll actually finish the AP Bio curriculum by the exam. This means we get to do a fun (in a morbid way) Ebola unit for the last three weeks of the year. Anyway, for the human unit we focus on the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems and embryonic development. I'm going to try the Pom-Pom Potential activity from Learn Genetics Utah and possibly Jumpin The Gap. Then we'll look at the Nerve Cell Communication activity from the Life Sciences Learning Center of the University of Rochester. We also do a fun lab looking at circulation in goldfish tails and the effect of epinephrine on the circulation. Still looking for a good immune system lab or activity.

Chapter 40 Guided Reading-Animal Form and Function
Chapter 43 Guided Reading-The Immune System
Chapter 45 Guided Reading-The Endocrine System
Chapter 46 Guided Reading-Reproduction
Chapter 47 Guided Reading-Embryonic Development
Chapter 48 Guided Reading-Neurons, Synapses, and Signaling
Chapter 49 Guided Reading-Nervous System

Now that I've finished updating these reading guides, I'm hoping to make a page that includes all of these guides...soon.

Unit 9 Reading Guides--Ecology

We are coming up to our ecology unit soon, so I've been revising our guided reading notes for this next-to-the-last-unit for the year.  We actually start this unit with animal behavior and I pull out the termites for us to experiment with. This unit also includes estimating population sizes--with a fun capture/recapture lab with "bean" organisms.

Here are the guided reading notes by chapter.

Chapter 52: An Introduction to Ecology and the Biosphere
Chapter 53: Population Ecology

Unit 8 Reading Guide-Plants

I've started to prepare for our next unit in AP Biology.  This is our shortest unit of the year.  We only take 8 periods for this unit--4 of which are spent on the Transpiration lab. The picture above was taken last year as part of this lab. I combine all of the plant chapters into one set of notes, since we primarily focus on transpiration and tropisms.

Here are the notes:

Unit 6 Guided Reading-Molecular Genetics

My AP Biology class will be finishing our Mendelian Genetics unit right before Christmas vacation. So, as soon as we return to school in January, we'll be diving into what I believe is the most intense unit in AP Biology.  We also get to do the high-tech labs of bacterial transformation and electrophoresis.  Fortunately there are several hands-on activities in addition to the labs to help make molecular genetics more concrete for students.

Here are the guided reading questions by chapter for this unit:

Chapter 16: The Molecular Basis of Inheritance

Chapter 17: Gene Expression-From Gene to Protein

Chapter 18: Regulation of Gene Expression

Chapter 19: Virus

Chapter 20: DNA Tools and Biotechnology

Reading Guides for Unit 2--Cells

I finished tweaking the Holtzclaw's guided reading questions to fit within the new AP Biology curriculum framework for my Unit Two chapters.  These should work for both the Campbell Biology texts and Biology in Focus (although the chapter numbers will be a little different).  Chapter 6 focuses on organelles and their functions.  Chapter 7 focuses on membranes and transport into and out of cells.  This is where we do the AP diffusion and osmosis lab.  Chapter 11 introduces the signal transduction pathway.

Happy reading!
